A coral inspired garland out of hot glue and braid for the Christmas tree.

As a continuation of my beach inspired Christmas decoration quest, I had this idea. It can easily be adapted to whatever theme you want.

Items required are:

  • glue gun and sticks
  • braid - I got mine from a sewing shop
  • silicon sheet - nice to have but a plastic tray or baking sheet will suffice
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • spray paint
  • small scissors- depending on your glue gun skills

Spray the silicon sheet or tray with non-stick spray. This will make it much easier to remove the glue charms once they are dry. Then fire up the trusty glue gun and start making charms.

Once dried, I loosened all the charms. Granted, I am not the world’s best glue gunslinger and some of the charms were extremely hairy. I took some time to tidy them up, using a pair of scissors in some instances.

Once tidied I sprayed them gold on both sides.

Next I cut the braid to the required length, perhaps 1.5m and sealed the edges with the glue gun to prevent them from fraying.

I placed the braid flat on the sheet, taking care not to let it twist, This may require weighing it down with something. After planning the position of the charms by placing them above the braid in the required spots, I glued them on. In retrospect I should have spaced them more closely together to make a bigger impact. Never less, I am still pretty pleased with the outcome.

As the orientation of the braid will be twisted anyway once it is hung up on the tree, poking the pointed ends of the gold pieces through the spaces between the strands will help keep them adhered to the braid.
