How can I upcycle these shelves, and are they worth anything?

I bought these 2 shelves at goodwill and I thought they were interesting...but now I’m not sure if theY are interesting or just ugly? Does anyone know about Black Forest antiques? I’m sure these are knockoffs but I am thinking of painting them but don’t want to if any value!? Thanks for any input!
I don't know if they're antiques, but if they're knock-offs, I'd paint them and distress the edges.
Are they solid wood, wood veneer, or plastic?
Usually the function of shelves is to display something on them, so if the shelves are empty, they often look awkward.
Decide first whether you want to feature the design in the shelf carvings, or the object on display.
I think as the design of these shelf pieces is so busy, there is a risk that whatever item you do put on the shelf will just be competing with the cut out spaces in the pattern.
My suggestion is to tack a backing material- stiff fabric, or smooth cardboard, the same color as the shelves, on to the back of the top.
Play around with different objects on the shelf to see which look the most pleasing to your eye, being 'framed' from behind in one solid color, instead of competing for attention with the open spaces that show the wall behind.
Those are very interesting pieces! I would put them into my kitchen or bathroom. Likely spray paint them or use chalk paint and destress them to match my decor.
I think they are beautiful. I might use some Rub 'n Buff in an old gold to highlight the edges and leaves but nothing more. It is so easy to use on many things to add a little "oomph".
Are there any markings on the back ? They look very William Morris like ..Or art nouveau ... In that case they might have some value , if they are knock offs then I would possibly use chalk paint .
These are beautiful! I would chalk paint them white and use them as sconces that hold candle in a tall glass container
I would have them checked out. If they are true Black Forest shelves they could fetch$100 +. If they're not about $50. Are there any marks on the back or signs of a former label? Antique Black Forest items usually wouldn't be marked as there were and are many artists that produced them.

I love the design! So cute. If they were mine, I would spray paint a fun color, like hot pink or sea foam green.
I LOVE the patina on them and would not paint! Just some Old English or other wood oil.
