How big is the hole? If it is small use spackling or joint compound applied with a paint scraper. When dry lightly sand and paint. If it is a large hole you will need dry wall mesh patch. This attaches to the wall and you add spackling on top of it.

Large holes may require a section of sheetrock. Cut a piece larger than the hole and then trace around it with a pencil. Use a sheetrock saw to cut out old sheetrock to match the patch. Some backing strips are needed to hold the patch in place. Use sheetrock screws to attach them near the edges. Then put the patch on the hole and fasten it to the straps. Then use joint compound and tape to dress the patch. Paint after sanding and adding texture to match wall. Texture comes in a spray can. Watch You Tube videos for sheetrock techniques.

Try this new method: Square off the hole and then take a piece of drywall at least two inches larger all around. Trim the outside 2 inches of drywall off the paper until you have a piece of drywall that fits into the hole and then use the paper with spackle to stick the sides to the wall. Spackle over the whole thing and sand when completely dry. Be sure to use a primer first before painting or you will not be able to cover the area properly.
