Are you looking to build a functioning chimney that you can use for a fireplace or wood burning stove to actually provide heat? A fireplace to put an electric heater in? Or, just a faux mantle and fireplace surround to add decor to the wall?

Check local codes and hire a licensed mason if you want a brick fireplace and chimney. You can also get a zero-clearance gas unit that has a self venting inlet/outlet pipe that just goes through the wall. Most regular fireplaces waste more heat than they produce.
Build a plywood box in place on the wall. Apply brick slices to it. Apply trim at the top and bottom.

Build a box and attach it to the wall. You can get wall panels that are faux brick and paint them to look less faux.
