The holiday season is unlike any other time of the year. We open up our homes and dress it (and ourselves) to the nines. While I love a good holiday DIY project that makes a statement, often it can be the small touches or the simplest details that end up making the largest impact. Since holiday gatherings are often centered around food and meals, I felt this cheese knife update was just what was needed to make my holiday table a little brighter.

Materials needed:

-Cheese Knife Set or any set of utensils with wooden handles

-Paint (preferably a durable non-toxic paint that is thicker like a mineral paint)

-Dowel or old foam brushes

-Painters tape and paint brush (both are optional)

This project did not take much prep work nor did it take much time. To begin, I unboxed a new set of cheese knives that I had been given. I then made sure to shake the paint thoroughly and then took each knife one by one and dipped it to my preferred depth in the paint.

To be more precise, you can use painters tape to mark off the exact depth you are wanting. If you would rather use a brush instead of the dipping method, that’s fine too!

I then held each knife over the paint jar while it dripped and then laid it on a newspaper with a dowel underneath so that the handles were sticking up and allowed to drip any excess paint.

After about 30 minutes or depending on how quickly your paint begins to dry, I recommend rotating the knife so that any drip formations that may have occurred on the underside of the handle can be flattened out.

Once your knives are completely dry they are ready to be used! If you desire, you could apply a clear topcoat like a water-based polycrylic to seal the paint. Creating a pattern or doing a second color dip to make color layers could be a great addition to add even more flair to your project. Now serve and enjoy!

*Note: I suggest handwashing these utensils as the paint may not be durable enough to last in the dishwasher.
