If you click on my name, I spent quite a bit of time redoing my old steps. When we moved in, there was carpet whose backing had adhered to the steps and had to be scraped off. Removing the old carpet will give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. We had very old wood that needed scraping, scrubbing, and lots of elbow grease. Eventually, I painted the steps and risers. We have finally remodeled the upper hallway, so my next project is a pretty runner I found.
