what direction to lay laminate?

We are getting our family room done with 5 in strips of laminate. The room is approx 24x16. I want it to look wider, so I want the strips to go width-wise, and not lengthwise. I keep getting everyone telling me to do it lengthwise because of the quantity of cuts involved. Any thoughts?

normal practice for laying any "strip" flooring is to lay it with the long dimension of the room...to do so other wise makes it look goofy. When real hardwoods are laid the goal is to lay perpendicular to the floor joists. This adds a degree of stiffness to the floor. Is there a reason your going with laminate?....laminates are generally considered quick cheap disposable floors....if you plan to be in the home for a while you will get longer term value from real flooring....Most laminate look pretty crappy after 2-3 years and then must be replaced...while a real hardwood floor can last 100 years or more.... multiple laminate floors not only cost more in the long run, but also and harder on the environment with the waste and production costs.

I have a split level. It's being installed downstairs on top of concrete (with plastic vapor barrier). It's actually pretty nice, Pergo, and it wasn't the cheap stuff. It should last until I am dead, lol!

We put cheap laminate (from Big Lots) in our kitchen 8 yrs. ago and it still looks like new. Like you I wanted the kitchen to look wider and laid the laminate width-wise. It looks fine and I am quite happy with how it looks and wears. Do it the way YOU want it and don't worry what others say.
