How do I make a denim coat out of old jeans?
Want to make a Jean knee-length coat from old jeans. Want the coat to be baggy, and sleeves to be baggy, with the cap (top of sleeve) of the sleeves cap starting below the sleeve area. Would like the coat to close to the right with fasten at the neck area. This means the coat will cross my body to close. Need instructions as close to what I’m looking for. I could probably figure out a pattern if some information is not there. Saw this coat on the internet, looked for it again, but can’t find it. Thanks
Hi there Alexine.
Haven't seen the coat you have described, but suggest you start by drawing a T shape for the back. and make two pieces for the front. If you cut out these shapes on a scrap of fabric and sew the sides and top edges you will get what I mean and will be able to adjust the design from there. Once happy with the basic pattern transfer to full size paper pattern and then to an old sheet as a mock up.
Once you are happy, dismantle your old jeans and make up in to suitable pieces from which you can cut out your pattern. Best wishes.
Hope it turns out great - It will be your own designed piece!
Thanks for your pattern making instructions. Sounds like your idea will work. I’m going to give it a try
Check through patterns at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or any fabric store.

If any of the above replies don't answer all your questions about how to approach the project, I would suggest that you contact Threads magazine. They should be able to give you more specific sewing tips, and refer you to other sources of information and inspiration.

For any sewing project involving denim, I would recommend using a quality brand name Jeans machine needle, and a notions tool called a Hump Jumper, or a Jean-a-ma-Jig. This tool facilitates going over thick seam intersections, reduces needle breakages and skipped stitches.
For a more professional finish on your garment, use quality brand name specialty denim thread, or heavy duty topstitching threads.
This blog does amazing things with blue jeans, I am sure you can find a project here. https://www.pillarboxblue.com/denim-3/
