DIY Vintage Wood Block Letters!

Create wooden blocks with a vintage look and festive holiday sayings!

Years ago my daughter and I created block letters that we painted green and red that said NOEL when displayed. I put those blocks out every year because it was tradition, until this past year when they became casualties of a major cleaning in our attic and basement! So to keep the tradition going it was time to create new ones!!!

My hubby had a leftover 4x4 treated post from another project that would work perfectly for my blocks! The only challenge I had was convincing him I should use it on this project! icon He finally did give in so I measured each to be a perfect (imperfect) square which ends up being 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". The wood was pretty rough which is fine, but to avoid splinters I did give each cube a good sanding before I painted them.

I chose white paint for one set and black for the other. I used the dry brush method to paint on two coats for the white. This gave the blocks the aged look I was going for without any additional distressing.

The lettering was simply centering a stencil on the block and using a stencil brush and some black craft paint on the white blocks. I repeated this on the black blocks using white paint for the lettering.

Once the lettering dried I distressed a few of the edges with a light sanding.

This year I chose two new words that describe what Christmas means to me! The total cost for these vintage blocks was $0 because I had all of the materials on hand! I hope our new letters last just as long as the old ones! You can find the full tutorial over on my blog!!

I like this. Thinking of summer....so this for outside on a table.....use a small hole saw to put a shallow hole in the top just big enough for a tea light.....The letters can spell anything summery/beachy/ cottagey...yes...I know, none of those are words...lol...
