if you put a red brick or a half a brick in the tank above the bowl it will displace water and you use less water when flushing, thus saving a bit on the utilities bill
Usually nothing should go behind a toilet - not much space there. You can find shelving and storage units that straddle the toilet and fit above the tank. What else were you thinking about?

Maybe slit a garbage bag and tape it on the wall. Then change it when needed...
