I have cleaned my burners the same way for years. There are two methods.
One quick and easy. Get Oven and Grill cleaner from the dollar store. Put caps in a zip lock bag. Spray and let sit overnight, All the goop will come right off.
Or
Just put in zip lock bag and pour ammonia on the caps. Let sit overnight in closed zip lock. Will wash clean with water in the morning.

So welcome Patricia! Vinegar and baking soda is what I use, and I cook and clean the stove several times a day. 🌞
Check your owner's manual if you have it or go on-line for questions at the manufacturer's website.
I spray any baked on grease with GP66 and wipe with a microfiber cloth.
