If you choose to use the homemade salt clay make sure you seal your project with a clear poly spray once your paw imprints have dried thoroughly. The salt clay does last for a few years but will start to disintegrate/soften/crumble over time. Spraying it with a clear ploy will prolong the life of your pawprint. It's not a last forever project but it should last 4 to 8 years.

Easy pet & kid safe clay / dough . In medium saucepan mix 1 cup baking soda , 1/2 cup corn starch and 3/4 cup water . Put on medium high heat . Whisk it to mix well then switch to a scraper or wooden spoon . Continue to mix until it's the consistency of thick mashed potatoes , this should only take 3-5 minutes . Then place it into a bowl to cool . Once cool enough to handle knead it for a minute , then roll it out to 1/4 thick and cut into shapes , or in your case , stick your dog's paw in it . I roll it out on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper . Use a small straw or toothpick to make a small hole , so you will be able to hang them . Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper place your ornaments on it and bake at 175° for an hour ...yes 175° !!! I have read that you can air dry these , but I haven't tried that . This dough is nice to work with , it is a nice bright white , but you can add food coloring to make it another color . What you don't use , Keep in a zip lock bag .

Oh, do you recommend a sealer spray on finished product to maintain it through the years?

I guess that would be a good idea ! I didn't and they have held up for 2 years !!!

Loved your web site. Many wonderful crafts. I have 4 dogs that I need to make paw prints for as we have in years past bought a kit for our long gone precious pups and now are so glad we did it, but the kits are priced way out of our budget anymore. This salt dough recipe is a great way to do this! Thank you so much!
