I hand-painted the one shown below on an old piece of 24" barn wood---but you could use any size wood you want. Screwed in some wooden drawer pulls for the stocking hangers. Just hang on the wall (in the studs to support 8 filled stockings!) It's great for those who don't have a mantle.
The trick is to make sure it is anchored well. I would think for something that large, if you want 1 continuous hanger, use a 4x4 piece of wood then decorate and screw hooks for hangers. Maybe pick up some old spoons & forks and bend the handle.
