Hi Viv. I'm Cindy. I put my grates in the dishwasher every couple weeks. Works great.
I do the same. Dishwasher. If no dishwasher soak them in the sink with hot water and a few squirts of Dawn dish liquid. Agitate to foam it up.

Do this outside.
What I do is take off 2 of the burner grates and put each on in a 1 gallon freezer bag, pour in 1/2 cup ammonia to each and seal it. The ammonia fumes do the work. Let it set overnight and the next day put on vinyl gloves, open the bags (still outside) and rinse the grates well. Allow to dry and you are done. Repeat this on the other 2 grates the next day.
