I would try organic first, as what you are smelling is probably bio-slime.

septic tank enzymes are affordable and will eat the slime. You’ll need to treat them at night and let them work.

if you can get a bottle brush down there, mechanically remove what you can before the enzymes.

Remove as much as possible with a snake or drain cleaning tool. Pour ½ cup baking soda then ½ cup white vinegar in the drain and cover, letting sit for 20 minutes. Boil water, remove cover, and pour water down the drain. You may have to repeat the process.

Even though we have an auger, most commonly we find that our drains need to be physically fished out. Either using an unbent hanger as a refashioned hook or plastic barbed tool from the dollar store to explore the drain obstruction.

Fishing out the blockage with that in -our experience— to partially involve hair seems to most readily alleviate stoppage to alleviate odors in our sink and shower drains.

  • Once a month I take the spent baking soda boxes from the freezer and pour down all the drains and toilets in the house. Follow with a cup or so of white vinegar. Let sit for 10 minutes then flush with warm water. Keeps my drains and toilets clean and odor free.
