Yes, if you are going to coat it with polyurethane to finish it, you should have no problem using acrylic craft paint. Have fun! What a thoughtful gift!

Yes. I used craft paints and a seal of multiple layers 6-8 coats of poly. Its has held up wonderfully over the years. I would definitely suggest primer before decorative painting.
