Canvas pictures are put into the same frames as other pictures. That is unless you want to fasten wood slats around the edge of the canvas. Making picture frames requires some skill, it is difficult. You must miter the corners and know how to cut the wood, It can be done but most artists either have frames made or buy them ready made.
Hi Sharee, hope this little video helps you out
Hello I find it most economical Way to get frames is to go to thrift stores or consignment shops and purchase frames there. Very often I’ll have the frame before I have the art piece because of the cost saving effectiveness. Quite often the price you’re paying for the secondhand frame won’t won’t cover the cost of either the glass frame or Matt alone.
Frames can be spray-painted to meet your color needs. I sucessfully changed a large gold frame to brushed nickel with patin to match my lighting and hardware in my home. Additionally I have even re-primed the canvas inside the frame and repainted that to suit my decor.

How about this idea:
I buy rolled canvas pictures online, and instead of buying expensive stretchers, I buy an inexpensive canvas the right size and staple the rolled canvas to the wood frame. I reuse old canvases for this, too.
My husband makes these all the time our of scrap wood. I just simply stain or paint the frame after he cuts it down to size.
