Here's some tips for taking care of a cast iron skillet Linda! You want to make sure you have seasoned your cast iron skillet. It will be easier to clean and stay rust free!
Hi Linda: I have my grandmothers cast iron skillets and have used them for over 50 years. I wash them in soap and water, dry them completely and then put a thin coat of vegetable oil on the inside and then I turn them upside down on my gas stove burner. I have the burner on high and leave them for about 5 minutes, let them cool and then wipe them out and reoil and back on the stove again. I wipe them out completely and put them away. If you don't have a gas stove, you can put them in the oven at 450 for about 20 minutes and let cool, wipe and reapply the oil and cook them again:) They are very sturdy, but do tend to rust if you don't let them dry out completely. I only season them about every 3 or 4 months. When I wash them, in between time, in soapy water, I just use a sponge to wipe them out, rinse well dry and use a paper towl with a little oil on it to season it lightly, and then put them away. Just like my grandmother did, and my pans look perfect :) Good luck

The Secret of How to Clean Cast Iron in Four Easy Steps
Normal cleaning with just water and a brush. Heat on a stove eye or in the oven to make sure it doesn't rust.
If you have any rust, you can scrub it with steel wool and then dry.
If you need to restore, wipe with shortening and bake in an oven on 350 for an hour. Put a drip pan below the skillet to catch any run off.

No soap, I use salt. If there is food stuck on good I boil water on the stove in the pan to loosen it.
