How do I clean the rim of the toilet where the water flows from?

Pam
by Pam

We do have hard water, but not as bad as some places that we have lived. Under the rim it is always black something. Can you use anything that because of its placement fails because of the whole gravity thing and not being able to "stick enough" under the rim to do it's job. I am not sure that I am making myself clear. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Is there a solution? HELP and thanks. Pam

Unfortunately, I know exactly what you are meaning! We are on well water and over time, that stuff starts staining and it is awful. Are you on a well?

This is going to sound a bit weird but it did work for me. Turn off water to toilet, give another flush to drain tank.

Fill the whole bowl with Coke. Fill it right to the top so that underside you talk about is covered in Coke. Let it sit for a few hours.

Open tap to toilet, flush the Coke down and then scrub the toilet. Strange but it works, that Coke is a bit corrosive and gets at those hard water stains.

I hope it works for you. After you do that major clean, maintain it regularly. Someone gave the idea of using a baby bottle brush and I think that's a great idea.

the above sounds like great advice and I would add to that to use a rag with comet or some such cleaner on it and wipe that rim off everyday and then use the rag to wash the cleanser off.

Use a smaller toilet brush. Apply toilet cleaner to the brush and scrub. Or squirt the gel type clingy toilet bowl cleaner on there and begin to scrub right way! Another idea is to use a baby bottle brush--it's a lot smaller and you can fit it in that space better. Of course--save THAT baby bottle brush for the toilet!

You can always clean it with a Magic Eraser... those things work wonders.

Holly -I also use those. It never dawned on me to try them on the toilet! Thanks.

I use a Mr Clean Magic Eraser under the rim and it takes all the black gunk off- I have to do it every week at my house but when I let it go it builds up fast

Cheryl - We have battled with the black stuff for years. It is probably going to take several attempts for sure. Thank you.

I use a heavy duty scrubbie, with toilet bowl cleaner and ajax. Then I have a thin nail that I use to make sure the holes under the rim are open and not clogged.

Dee - Thank you. I never would have thought about the nail.

    Hi Pam,

You could also make a paste of baking soda and water. Brush it on the stained area and then spray with white vinegar. Let that soak for 20-30 mins then scrub off with the toilet brush. Repeat if necessary. I hope that helps. Wishing you the best.

You're welcome, Pam. I think of baking soda and vinegar first for almost every cleaning project. LOL My favs also include Hydrogen Peroxide - also with baking soda.

Use smaller pieces Like a quarter of a sheet) and make them really wet. If you put up large hunks they are too heavy.

Soak paper towels in a bleach solution and "stick them" under the rim and let them sit for about a half an hour. Remove them. Don't flush them as no other paper but toilet paper should ever be flushed down the toilet. Also try a baking soda vinegar solution and scrub out the jets (holes) where the water flows into the bowl.
