Hi Lynn. I'm Cindy. Charcoal will remove odors. Put some charcoals on paper plates and place them where the odor is. It might take several days to work. Good luck Lynn.
Lots of sunlight and fresh air if possible, from the sounds of your post, the rat is somewhere you can't reach it-like inside a wall.. So removal is tough or impossible.
Some people have found that white vinegar in cups around the area are helpful, it will absorb the odor. But be careful with this if you have children or pets, keep that away from them. Best to you.
ODOBAN spray would probably do it! I have eliminated a lot of odors with that stuff. Great for pet odors and we were able to eliminate previous owner smoke smell out of a car. Its great stuff!
An ozone machine will actually bond with the odor molecules in the air and destroy them. You can rent one at any tool rental facility. Set it up in the room with the odors, evacuate all people and pets and set it to run for a couple of hours. Let the room sit closed for a couple hours more, then open up all windows and doors to air it out.
Rat urine is very potent smell. I've used hot soapy water with sudsing ammonia in it to clean the area. Then use a room shocker to get rid of any residual odor. You can find it on Amazon or at a home store like Home Depot.
put one to two drops of vanilla on a cotton ball or rolled up paper towel and lay in the area it will take the odor away and then the vanilla smell goes away too- I have used this on dead fish smell in coolers, dead animal smells on my dogs, and many other times too
There is a product called EnviroCon. Our duct cleaning business used it a germicidal in the cleaned ducts. I had something that died in my vent work about 2 years ago, and I sprayed this in the trunk lines through the cold air return. Started working almost immediately and in about a week, the air was clear. I would refresh the problem area with spray about every day for a week or so. You can get EnviroCon on line, here is a link to show you what it is. I keep a gallon on hand all the time just for such things... we live in rural area and sometimes things find the strangest places to croak! Tried and successful solution!

Try a bleach/water solution to neutralize the odor.
Bleach/water and or Febreeze.

I would bleach everything! The smell has to be left on something for the odor to persist.
