For what? A proper chimney? Yes, special brick is required along with following local building code, which must be inspected several times during the build. You can't just toss up a bunch of bricks and call it a chimney.

Yes you do!
Hi Winter. The inside of your chimney should be lined with ceramic fire bricks. They can withstand the heat of a fire. Ordinary brick will crack and deteriorate. Good luck on your project!
Yes! Here is a good post on the different types of chimney bricks! :)

There are a lot of unseen features inside a chimney that make it function properly. That is why masons exist... its a specialty that takes training and an apprenticeship. Otherwise any tom dick and harry could throw one up.
Yes, fire safe brick. Do lots of research about material and composition.
fire safe bricks but I will ask professionals and not attempt to do it by yourself. There are more things that needs to be done when building chimney. It is not a fire pit
Yes they make fire rated brick that you'll need to use. Most places that sell brick will have it for sale.
Yes but fire is not to be trifled with so I’d leave something like this to a pro who will follow the appropriate codes.
