Hello Lynn! you don't mention what kind of pillows you have. Down filled? Polyester filled?
I have successfully washed polyester filled pillows in the wash machine and taken pillows with down in them to the dry cleaners. A few pillows got lumpy after washing and I had to get new but most of my pillows have come out nicely. I also work at a resort and we wash/dry the pillows on a regular basis in the big commercial machines.
Here's a bit of info I hope will help you!

How to Wash and Whiten Pillows
Hi Lynn it does depend on the type of pillows you have. (Such as tempur pedic or memory foam pillows do require different handling) Here is a basic recipe: https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-wash-a-pillow-42606
Hi Lynn,
As others have said, some pillows need special instructions, but I've washed my pillows in a washer for years! The first time I washed them was when I was a young bride and I used my MIL's old ringer washer. Now I wash them with about a cup of vinegar in the washer along with the laundry detergent using the "Bedding" cycle on my washer. Times sure have changed. ;) Wishing you the best.
Hi Lynn - It depends on what kind of pillows you have, but most can be washed in the washing machine. I also use a DIY Febreze style air freshener. It's an all-natural and easy to make. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

We use the washer and dryer and haven't had any issues with misshapen pillows. Good luck!
Most new washing machines have a sanitize mode. I put our pillows in the wash on sanitize and even do the pre-wash. I fill the fabric softener cup with vinegar.

I usually spray the outside first with Spray n Wash, then put 2 in the washer with laundry soap and 1/2 c 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax. I have also used bleach on some.
