How do I keep squirrels off my wooden handrail?

hand rail is flat, the squirrels make a mess with their acorns etc.

Rub a soap bar on the handrail. Squirrels don't like soap and will stay away. Make sure to trim back trees or bushes that give them easy access.
You've gotten some good advice here. I'll also mention to keep any bird feeders away from your hand rail and to perhaps purchase a squirrel deterrent from a home improvement store--most taste bad to squirrels. You could also try soap as Scarlet mentioned. Hope this helps!
