I snapped up this vintage mid century planter on an online auction site and just knew it was destined to be a loved again with a stylish modern look.

I decide on the glass mosaic tiles of small 10 mm and 20 mm square in variety of colours. I had a vision for the little ones in the gaps and larger ones on stripes .I begin by using pva glue and sticking them down in straight rows of rainbow colours with small gaps in between for grout later.

I continue to build up the layers of tiles in the gaps and on the edges.

The pattern builds up and I then let it dry for a few hours before repeating the same on the other side of the planter.
Glue tiles into surface
I love how the piece begins to build up texture and colour and start thinking about sanding the old varnish on sides and legs to keep it a natural wood look .
Sanding the legs
I use a coarse grade sanding sheet first and the go over it all with a finer smoother grade to create nice finish.
Sanding old varnish off
I then begin to grout with ready mix black cement with a small card and my fingers to get into the tiny crevices.
Grouting tiles
I clean up the grout excess and start to bring the coloured tiles to life .
Clean excess grout from tiles
A final clean up and I’m so thrilled with the finished piece. Once my plants go in it really is a transformed ready to be loved again piece.
