How do I apply contact paper to laminate countertops?

My kitchen has ugly old brown laminate kitchen countertop/snack bar. I'm on a very low budget so decided to try covering them with contact paper. I found a nice light gray granite paper. I know contact paper can be tricky - especially since they're an odd shape and size varies - and I'm looking for some tips for successful application. Thanks!

I would do a bit of practice but pulling the backing slowly and applying with a credit card size plastic scraper to smooth has worked best for me in this type job. If you do get an air bubble that won't work out, pop with a pin.

Mark out a grid on the worktop. Line up the Contact, do not stretch and peel only a little at a time. Good luck!
It is paper thin, so you understand that kitchens require substantial cleaning methods that will wear it out over time. Especially countertops.
I would save my money and buy a plastic laminate coating system and use half of it and then take it back and have them add more pigment to give you a second similar cover.
With this second similar color, I would use a faux sponge roller cover and make it a granite or mottled look. This will be very forgiving if you need to touch it up 5 years from now.

You should be able to redo your kitchen counters so that they last longer than Contact paper will. Gianni and Rustoleum make kits. I recently redid a kitchen sink using a Rustoleum kit and was very pleased with the results.

Be careful that if they are high traffic counters you may encounter problems with the durability. But if you decide to move forward a smoothing tool or even a credit card will be very helpful. Good Luck!
