  • Hi, Pj!

My favorite paint to use is Behr Ultra in a color called Silky White. Since your cabinets are dark, you want to start with a really good "high-hiding" primer so that you don't have to use as many coats of paint. Kilz 2 is a good choice, in my opinion. Be sure to thoroughly clean the cabinets with TSP prior to priming and painting! I hope this helps!

One of my favorite white paint colors is Sherwin Willians Alabaster. It’s a beautiful creamy, slightly off-white color that isn’t too stark and has no odd undertones. It really looks great in all light! I’ve used this color throughout my main floor as well as on walls and furniture. Definitely clean the cabinets and then use at least two coats of primer. I used a latex enamel paint and a satin poly to protect them and for easy cleanup.

There are paints specifically for cabinets. I would go with one of those, something with a tough finish. I love enamel paint but not sure if you can get a color you want.

Pam W has it right! Clean, prime, and Sherwin William paint! ProClassic enamel paint finish for cabinets, trim and doors! I used this paint about 5 years ago over previously painted cranberry red cabinets. I only sanded down the sheen from the cranberry red paint, cleaned them well, and applied primer first before painting. It took 3 coats of paint with some really good drying time in between coats--so give each coat of paint about 24 hours to dry in between coats. It does lengthen the process but it's worth the extra time. Also keep in mind that your paint does not fully cure for about 30 days. It will feel dry to the touch after 24 hours but it's not fully cured yet. Be careful for the first month. You can rehang everything and add your hardware but I wouldn't wash anything down or be too rough until it's all cured. It has worn well, washes well, and I have only had to do a few minimal slight touchups around the door handles. I did not use a satin poly over this paint but you can for more protection! It will last!

I favor Behr and Benjamin Moore paint products. Newer paint products are appearing all the time. The staff at the paint counter might have the best expert advice.

Hi Pj! I have used Annie Sloans old white chalk paint on many kitchen cabinets! It has worked great! No sanding or priming beforehand. :) Here is a post on how to paint your cabinets white with chalk paint.

Chalk paint is the easiest to work with but you may get a longer lasting finish with Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.
