If you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore near you. They have solid wood doors. I paid $5 per door. I used two doors cut them down to the size I needed.

Picked up some cabinet doors there also. They have a stack for a couple bucks. Screw it together, if needed add

    L- brackets. Add shelves.

I covered mine with shiplap and added a wood countertop.

Another option is to buy a used cabinet, countertop and coasters if you want to move it.

Hi Edith, I made my little island out of my great grandpa's old radio stand. It cost me very little, just paint and castors. the Previous answer of using an old door for the top is a great idea! I would definitely go browsing at your local thrift shop or salvage depot!

Check thrift stores for a piece that can be converted.

    Hi Edith,

How about making use of a table (secondhand) and give it a new longer top to pop under a small cupboard ????? You can always block in the ends...........Best wishes.

  • We turned and old table into a farmhouse styled island. You could use the same idea and add brackets for baskets to mount under one side or add shelves and hide them with a sliding curtain.Or you could attach a dresser underneath one side for storage drawers. Here's how we turned the table into an island for inspiration. https://www.exquisitelyunremarkable.com/2013/06/decorating-cheats-farmhouse-table.html

I have made islands from old kitchen cabinets, a bi-fold door as the table top, and a couple of wrought iron brackets for an overhang on one end to accommodate a stool. Check Habitat for Humanity Restore for used cabinets, or find if a house is to be torn down and get permission to take the cabinets out, check the yellow pages for architectural recyclers who do that and have many older home cabinets.

I love using furniture as a kitchen island. You can always add a countertop to the top.
