Dark Cottage Kitchen Updated to a New Modern Farmhouse Style

4 Materials
6 Weeks

When our youngest decided she wanted to be a homeowner, we set out to find her a low cost fixer up in a stable, safe neighborhood. With house prices rising rapidly, she was lucky to score a little (and I mean very little) cottage home in an established family friendly neighborhood. While it really was move-in ready, this young 20-something wanted the kitchen renovated, like yesterday! With barely a budget, but a very handy dad, they set out to completely transform the space.Lets have a look at where we started!
Not horrible! But the tongue and grooved pine paneling made the room feel even smaller than it is.First up was demo!
First thing to go was all the existing cupboards and counter and sink. All of the tongue and grooved pine was also removed and new drywall installed.
Next to go was the wall between the dining room and kitchen! Opening that up made all the difference!
We went with Ikea cabinets that were purchased during one of their cashback events! Our daughter had her heart set on navy blue cabinets, which weren't available in her budget, so she opted for white and painted them herself.
The cabinets were assembled and installed. We wanted to optimize the lower cabinets since she wanted open shelving on the top. Adding a small peninsula added much needed storage!
The back of the peninsula was covered with tongue and grooved pine and painted navy. After the cabinets were installed, the sink was finally ready to go in. You can see all the details regarding the farmhouse sink on the blog, but suffice it to say, it was a huge improvement over the well worn basic stainless sink that we started with!
Butcher block counters were not only cost effective, but also the exact style she wanted. Win, win! After all the plumbing was finished, we had an electrician come in to move some wiring and get things ready for new light fixtures. While the Mr. is really handy, he leaves electrical to the professionals! The flooring was the last to go down. She actually purchased enough flooring to do the whole house, but since we are working one room at a time, we just installed it in the kitchen for now.You can see this entire One Room Challenge makeover project at here. But wait until you see the finished room! It is such a huge transformation! Done on a bare bones budget (as far as kitchen reno's are concerned) yet has added so much value to her little home!
Can you believe the difference! We still have a few finishing touches to complete, but it is such a breath of fresh air! Again, you can see the entire renovation step by step on the blog!

I'm sure glad you were able to add the peninsula for added counter space. The stove is so close to the sink! Love all the choices made as to style, color, and fixtures.
