Janis: I painted my brick fireplace! Merely prime and then a couple of coats of a good latex. The primer will REALLY get sucked up in the brick and mortar. Here's my fireplace:
You could just use reg wall paint .no prep maybe 2 coats .

Clean with TSP then you are ready to prime and paint. Spray would be best. Make sure the paint is for masonry.
