Can you recommend a flea repellent?

Not really, fleas are everywhere. There are pills you can get from your vet, there are topical treatments like Advantage or Frontline and a bunch of home remedies.

The only problem with some of the home remedies is that they might cause other problems in the long run. One remedy uses Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar (mind you i am a huge fan of vinegar and use it for many applications around my home), vinegar is an acid and over time can cause skin issues which then you need a vet to help remedy. Is it worth it? In my opinion, no. Why would I want to cause harm to my dogs.

However, I spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house once a month with white vinegar. Needs to be reapplied after every rain event. It does help repel fleas and ticks.

If you live in a heavily infested area, the best thing to do is consult with your vet for the best plan for your dogs. I can't use the chewable treatment on two of my dogs as it makes them ill. And comb or brush the dogs before brining them back in the house - get a good flea comb from any pet shop.

If around your home, you can always call an exterminator. Just be aware that they use poison. Supposedly "safe" (in my opinion, no), after dried. If your pets nibble on grass, they ingest the poison and if eating enough, can make them quite sick.

Hi Ann! We had the unpleasant experience of fleas, not once, but, twice over the years. Our pets had to be treated. Our house was never cleaner, because I spent so much time cleaning. Fleas have a two week cycle and they lay eggs in your upholstery, carpet- anywhere. A good vacuum is essential. Empty it outside to keep the eggs from hatching in your house. If it has a bag, seal it with tape and put it in an outside garbage can. I was told by the exterminator to bag anything that couldn't be washed in hot water for at least two weeks. I ended up bagging for a month or more. Then I opened the bags outside so I could shake off the dead fleas that had hatched. What has kept it from happening again? Diatomaceous earth is sprinkled around the perimeter of my home, inside. Pets are flea dipped and then drops on schedule. I only used the exterminator the first time, since the chemicals used concerned me. My pets were indoor pets, but, they were brought in on someone or something. It's been years, and I find the vacuuming, diatomaceous earth and treatment of my pets works.

There is no foolproof flea repellent that has been made or the veterinarians chemical companies would not be making so much money. If it is for your pet the new Sentinal and Bravecto do a great job. I hate to give it to my dogs, but I also hate fleas.

I use a combo of flea traps and the flea drops. The flea traps keep the house pretty much flea free, I have one in each room. Fleas hatch every 9 days. I also use 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax in a glass shake bottle on the carpets and furniture if needed as this was a suggestion from vet that its not harmful to the pets or kids.... leave on 3 hours and then vacuum up. Repeat in 9 days if you've had an infestation.

I also use Greenerways Bug Repellent that is a non-toxic repellent on mysellf and furniture as I am allergic to flea bites. I get it on Amazon. Its citronella oil, lemon-grass oil, and cedar oils..... smells good to me.

Hi Ann,sorry you are having problems with fleas. I have had animals for years and have tried natural and cheap stuff, but the only thing I have found to repel fleas is treat your yard or have it treated and go to the vet and get the flea repellent that goes on the back of the neck on your animals. It is not cheap, but it is worth it. Fleas are really hard on animals and can bite you too. Good luck.
