How can I paint the top of an antique cabinet that has spots on it?

It depends on what caused the spots. If the finish is rough, you may need to sand and refinish it.

What is your project, hard to tell from your post?

Is the veneer popping up? A picture is needed to really help you. If it's the veneer you'll need to slit it open and put wood glue in and clamp it down. Make sure you wipe off excess glue and use wax paper under your clamp block.

Take a good photo to the paint department of your home improvement store and ask for their advice on materials and methods. They may have ideas you never thought of.

Depending on the sentimental value and/or relative value of this 140 year old antique, I wouldn’t paint it and wouldn’t replace the top until I tried to repair it first.

It does sound like veneer damage.

The cost of new veneer is high.

There’s a lot of YT videos on repairing veneers. I’d check them out first. What’s another year on this “ol’ darlin’” ?
