Here's a fun DIY that you can involve the kids in and it’s gonna make lighting your fire pit, a whole lot easier. They are homemade fire starters using sawdust, dryer lint and some fun herb additives!Who doesn’t love lounging by a fire pit? It's a great way to recycle dryer lint and sawdust. Plus if you have an herb garden, use your fresh rosemary, sage, basil and lemongrass for some wonderful natural scents.

What you'll need:

  • sawdust or dryer lint
  • wax (I also reserve my used up scentsy wax & scrapings from old candles)
  • wick or string
  • cupcake liners & muffin tin
  • sage/whole cloves/dried rosemary/orange peel (the grands love clementines, so I just save all the peel for this)
  • glass measuring cup or stainless steel pan (for melting wax)
(Fresh orange peel will make it smell so much nicer!)
Line the muffin tin with liners and start by adding a bit of sawdust or lint (or both), place the wick/string,
and continue filling 3/4's of the way with more and then add the cloves, rosemary & peel or whatever you want to add.
Melt the wax (doesn't take long), low to medium heat if stovetop or in the microwave in glass container.
Gently pour hot wax in each cup.
Allow to cool.
Once ready (after 1 hour or longer) you have the perfect little fire starter!
Wrap up in clear wrap tied with twine or put several in a baggie. They're perfect for gift giving to someone who loves lounging by their fire pit!

Why do you need the wax?

This sounds like a great thing for my burning pit but I am curious about the orange peels. How well did the orange peels burn? I thought they might have to be dried first.

I make fire starters for my brother-in-law. I will be making some of these. Very cute idea to use up sawdust and lint. Thanks for sharing.

I just stuff lint into toilet paper or cut paper towel rolls. Quick and all free and easy to light and no landfill garbage.
