Hello Melissa! If your living room is small, not of the open concept variety, does not have high ceilings, and is not a bright space I would agree that a darker color may make your living room seem smaller and closed in. One decorator trick is to take your paint color and lighten it up a few shades and paint it that color.

  • Painting a ceiling a color is very popular right now. Dark colors on the ceiling do tend to make the walls seem lower, but, you have to consider the size of the room and the amount of light in it. Here's an article to get you started:

I agree with Gk. Dark color will make your room appear smaller and lower the ceiling. That's why most ceilings are painted white. Get two to three shades lighter than your walls and it won't compress the size of the room.

My son has a walkout basement room that pretty well illuminated and the walls and ceilings are the same lt beige color. It makes the room feel small and closed in. Depending on your ceiling height it could be a risk.

Hi Melissa, dark colors on the ceiling not only make the room seem smaller, it makes the room darker, you could do a slight color tint in a white ceiling paint to add just a touch of color, hope this link helps you out
