From my own experience, I know to never put it in water. Once seasoned, wipe it out with a scrubby (non metallic) after using. My grandmother taught me to warm it up again to remove any moisture. You can put it in a warm oven or on a low heat burner for a half hour. Watch it and you will see the moisture work out of. Grandma always then wiped it with lard or bacon grease on a paper towel to season. I prefer a dab of olive oil. It won't rust if you maintain it. If it ever does, for whatever reason, you can scrub it back down to unseasoned metal and season it again. Grandma was 83 when she passed, and she still was using her original cast iron after 50+ years of marriage.
For regular maintenance, just wipe out. If you must use water, make sure you don't use soap and that you heat immediately afterwards. This will prevent rusting. I put mine on the stove and watch for all water to disappear and the skillet to be one shade of black.
If you need to re-season, heat your oven to 350. Put in a pan to catch any drippings. Coat the skillet with vegetable shortening then put in the oven upside down for an hour. Turn off the oven and let completely cool.
