Simple Furniture Hardware Update
We’ve had the furniture in our bedroom for almost 10 years. I get itchy feet to paint everything in sight but since this set is made from solid ash I just couldn’t do it and also my husband wouldn’t allow it! So instead I decided to add some white pieces to the room to mix the wood with some white. And also to update the hardware to create a whole new look without too much alteration to the pieces.
This is the before photo of the nightstands that I wanted to adapt. The handles are just plain chrome and I decided to spray them black to fit in with the black handles on the white pieces that I also have in the room.
Since this style of hardware is being used on pieces lately I figured if I sprayed them it would create more of a farmhouse look and also meant that I didn’t have to replace the handles. I love that I have been able to reuse them and also that I didn’t have to find more hardware or make more holes in the wood for another sized handle.
I placed the handles on an old box so that they would stand and I could easily apply the paint.
First I applied a coat of primer.
I sprayed as lightly as I could and 1-2 coats is all that was required for good coverage.
Once the primer was applied, after 15 minutes I sprayed them with a matt black paint.
This was followed by another coat 15 minutes later. This was all that was needed to get good coverage. I applied as lightly as possible to avoid runs.
Once they were touch dry, after about an hour, I removed them from the box to make sure that they didn’t stick to the paint that had also been sprayed on the box. I used a vinyl glove to do this just to ensure that I didn’t leave any fingerprints on the surface. I placed them on some food wrap so that I had a non stick surface and didn’t pull any paint off when picking them up later on.
I had missed a few areas at on the underneath side of the handles so I placed them lying flat on a clean surface and then sprayed lightly just to fill in any gaps.
Picking them up carefully again on the dry edges of the handles I placed down on the food wrap and allowed to dry. I left them for at least 24 hours to ensure they were touch dry and also to allow the paint fumes to wear off.
I then screwed the handles back onto the drawers. Since I already had the paint and was reusing the hardware I didn’t spend any money on this project. It was such a simple transformation and a great way to update a look by repurposing resources!
I just love the finished result from such a small and simple change!
