How do you preserve wood from water when using old furniture in the garden? I love the ideas I've seen but leary to do any yet. Thank you.

painting it or sealing it will help but eventually it will rot if it is exposed to the elements

I would use marine varnish.
Use Helmsman Spar Urethane. Used on wood boats.
You need a good quality out door varnish.
Marine grade finishes are designed to withstand the elements.
Water resistant finishes are great and I've read that the Marine varnish is great.
Sparurathane is a good outdoor sealant
If you must use an item not designed for outdoor use, I would use marine spar varnish to protect it or use teak oil. You will have to redo it each spring to make it last.
