I have a clear coat of something over the natural color on my cabinets. This clear coat has cracks or small lines in it. Can this be repaired. They are 10 year old cabinets and finish.

You should be able to sand it off Patti. Then either put a new clear coat on it or leave the cabinets natural.

Hi Patti I would start with a hard core cleaning. The most popular agent to use now is TSP. Here's some more info on that: https://weekendcraft.com/diy/how-to-clean-your-kitchen-cabinets-with-tsp/

From there are the cracks discolored? Could you lightly sand them out and then put a new coat of clear coat over them?

They are not colored or yellowed. The cabinets are a natural color of knotty Alder. The cracks look like a clear coat finish that has cracked with fine lines.

Wood expands and contracts. The clearcoat doesn't move with the wood. Time and temp changes can cause it to crack. I agree with light sanding 220 grit sandpaper, wipe off with a damp cloth. The three coats of a water based poly. Dries fast and rock hard.

Brush with denatured alcohol and after a couple of minutes use fine steel wool to remove as much as possible. I had to do this to my mother in law's cabinets after a small grease fire. You might also use a plastic scraper to remove imperfect finish.
