You can paint it or add a schmeer to it (not sure if that's spelled right). You could remove it - what a mess. Cover it up with tile or sheetrock.

I agree. You can paint it or white wash it. Fir out the walls with1X2 Firing strips and cover with drywall.

Not only can you paint it but you can white wash it also. That will give a lighter look to the brick but at the same time let some of the variation show thru.

Whitewash Paint

The materials are inexpensive, and with the help of a partner, you can transform an entire brick fireplace in just a few hours. If possible, remove the mantel or cover it with taped plastic. Mix equal parts white latex paint and water, and apply the paint to the brick and grout using a paintbrush. As you work, have a partner come along behind you and wipe the excess paint off with a rag. If you're working alone, do a section at a time, wiping off the excess paint before it dries. Test your whitewash formula on an inconspicuous area of the brick first.
