How to Refinish your Dining Table for a more updated look.

Trying to remove an unwanted stain on a piece of furniture? Learn how to refinish your dining table in a few easy steps with little to no sanding. This easy project can give life your old furniture by turning it to some you love and matches your current decor. In our case, we are doing a dining table makeover.Do you remember our DIY Farmhouse Dining Table? And how I said the stain turned out darker than expected? Well, it turns out even though we loved the table and how it defined our dining room that we absolutely hated the reddish-brown color. So we embarked on this journey of Refinishing our dining table to achieve a more modern bleached look. This is what you will need:

Supplies:

  • 1- Citri -strip wood stripper
  • 1- paintbrush
  • 1- plastic scraper
  • Lint-free rag
  • Household bleach
  • 150 grit sandpaper
  • Minwax whitewash stain
  • Minwax Dark Walnut stain
  • Clear poly

Tools:

  • Orbital sander
Before
Step 1: Apply a generous amount with a brush and let sit for 1-2hrs. I noticed the longer I left it on the harder it was to scrape off. It does not have a harsh smell so it is safe to use inside.

During
Step 2: Scrape the Citri strip along with the table finish using a plastic scraperStep 3: give it a light sanding using 150 grit sandpaperStep 4: Apply 100% bleach to the table using a lint-free rag. I applied 5 coats. Let the table try in between coats

During
Step 5: Neutralize the bleach with a 4:1 water/vinegar solution.Step 6: Apply whitewash to the table with a lint-free rag. After it has dried give it a light sand.Step 7: Apply dark walnut stain with a lit free rag. I used 0000 steel wool after it dried to give it a smoother appearance.Step 8:Seal table after with matte poly. We applied 3 coats

After

Step 9:Enjoy!

I am so glad we were able to successfully refinish our table and achieve a lighter wood look. Now I am 100% in love with our dining room table that we built! We can now continue to host and enjoy our family dinners.
