How can I upcycle reclaimed wood for use in a bathroom?

We are currently remodeling our main bathroom. We live in Western North Carolina on our family farm. The outhouse that my dad and grandparents used recently got torn down. We were able to stay the original door and a couple of boards from the walls. I want to somehow incorporate this beautiful piece of history into the bathroom. I am looking for suggestions. Thank you

Cassandra: you could make shelves with the boards... and maybe use the door as wall "art" -- especially if it has the cool half-moon design! ...even if you have to cut down to fit!

You could take the door and add towel rods or shelves and hang it in the bathroom.

I was thinking shelves and art also, but one more step would be to make sure you seal the wood. It has been outside forever and you never know what kind of bugs have made their home in this wood.

A separate water closet with the outhouse door comes to mind. The boards could be used for shelving.

You could do an accent wall with wood planks, kind of like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU1nOT8gYAg

Considering the source of the wood, I would want to do a couple of decor items that are miniature outhouses. A toilet brush holder, toilet paper holder, and over the toilet cabinet were my favorites. I agree with treating and sealing the wood. You have a wonderful idea salvaging this wood.

Hi ! What a nice idea ! To incorporate some of your family's history within your home !!! You can make inset shelves on an interior wall in your bathroom , by cutting the sheetrock between the studs , then use the outhouse door to cover the area .

you can use some of the boards to make floating shelves above the toilet !

Good luck ! Please post your before and after pictures 😄

  • Hi Cassandra - SO. MUCH. FUN! I like some of the ideas above to make floating shelves or some kind of accent wall or piece in your bathroom. I think using the pieces in your bathroom will make it all that more special. Good luck with your project! Hugs, Holly

As someone who had an outhouse for many years, makes my clean gene cringe at the thought.
