How can I jazz up glass tiles in my kitchen?

I have a single row of glass tiles the length of my counter top. There's a window in the middle with cupboards on either side. Is there anything i can do to jazz them up without having to take them out. I have cupboards on either side of the sink which could use another couple of rows of something to bring the level up to the cupboards. This would be going above the glass row already there. Any ideas?

What about adding a small shelf above the tiles for storage?

  If I did that the shelf would be on the window ledge. You need to see it. I will send a pic. That wouldn't solve the problem of changing the tiles either.

Changing the grout color would add a nice pop. Chiselnout the old by tapping a small chisel with a hammer then put in new and seal.

How about floating shelves? it would give you more storage and you wouldn't have to remove the glass there.

  There is one row of 3 inch tiles along the back of the sink. This abuts onto the window ledge directly above. To each side of the window there is another 9 inches of wall space between the top of the tile and the bottom of the cupboards.
  
  Shelving wouldn't replace the tiles, wouldn't look good, and I don't need any more shelving. A picture is needed I know.

  Just covering the existing row of tile might work, but I want to add more tile to the 9 inches above the existing row and the bottom of the cupboards. So it wouldn't lie flat without removing the exiting tile which I am trying to avoid. The glass tiles I have are 3 inch which is exactly the space I have between the sink and the window ledge.
