How can I paint the exterior side of my entry doors?

1. Remove the door from its hinge pins with the hammer and place it on the sawhorses.
2. Remove the hardware from the door and place it somewhere safe.
3. Lightly sand the door with 400-grit sandpaper.
4. Use the vacuum with the dust attachment to clean off the door, then wipe it down with a wet rag.
5. Prime and then after dry pour the paint into a tray. Cut around the panels of the door or any other trim details using the paint brush.
6. Switch to a microfiber paint roller to paint the rest of the door. To minimize stroke marks, use long strokes and light pressure on the roller.
7. Let the door sit for an hour or two until dry, then apply the second coat.
8. Allow the second coat to dry, and then rehang the door.

Hi ! Both home depot and Lowe's carry front door paint ! It comes in a small can and is made just for this purpose ! They come in several colors and I believe they come with the primer built it ! Just clean your door down with a product like Krud Kutter all purpose cleaner or a mixture of hot water , white vinegar and a few drops of dawn dishwashing detergent , then rinse well and let dry before painting.

Just for reference, the inside of my front door is painted the same color as my walls, but in a gloss finish so it is easier to clean. Outside is a different color to coordinate with the homes exterior color scheme.

Personally not a fan of "all in one" paint formulas. Go to a proper stand alone paint store like Sherwin Williams or Dunn Edwards. Their staff can walk you through the entire process and provide you with the correct formula for steel doors.

When you purchase a new door, it's usually primed from the factory however after time passes this primer needs to be repainted so that it can have adequate tooth for the paint. There will also be a buildup of residue that needs to be cleaned. First clean door with TSP or dish soap and rinse and dry. Then primer. I use Kilz or metal primer. The combined paint and primer are not adequate for this. Once primed, then paint with a direct to metal paint. There are both acrylic and alkyd direct to metal paints. Either is fine, however the alkyds take much longer to dry. For a professional finish, use either a very fine nap roller or an hvlp sprayer.
