Can I clean a brick with water without changing its color?
Can I clean brick with just water? Thinking of rubbing white chalk on the brick fireplace to brighten it up. Don’t want to paint it. Then wipe it off with water for a change back.

It should, although since brick is rough and porous, you may have to scrub a bit with a brush to remove all of it.
I think it might need a bit of soap!

If you put chalk on the brick it will wash off if you clean it.
Sounds like a good idea. I see so many people painting and then changing their mind or selling. Chalk sounds like a great removable substance that could be mostly removed with a spray bottle of soapy water.
I don't know what chalking a brick fireplace would look like. Definitely wouldn't look like paint. Wouldn't look like any kind of stone. Try a small spot first and see if you like the look. Wouldn't take much to remove it. Some soapy water, scrub brush, and sponge.
How about using whitewash? Here are some gorgeous examples
