How high up do you start hanging pictures on a stairway wall?

Ok so as you can see from my pics, it is a large area to use. I have a two story entrance way and I want to hang photos along the wall coming down the stairs. The wall I'm using has no hand rail, so it's a blank space.

My question is.........how high up from the stairs do I start hanging my pictures?

I am going to be using a slightly random pattern with the frames, as I'm not really into "neat/perfect" arrangements. πŸ˜‰

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸ»

There are lots! of factors to think about in your case. However, the first thing you should do is gather your pictures. Do you want to have a continuous display along the stairs or do you want to do groupings? All photographs or throw in some pieces of art to break up the photos? Think about balance always. Color balance, visual balance, achieved by the shapes, sizes and colors of your frames. Since your stairs curve you have that added factor to deal with. And since, you have those iron pieces in the rail, you have to find things that coordinate with that since it is a definite "decor style" piece that makes a statement. This is a big job! I hope you have someone that can help you. :)

Thank you for the insights doll! This wall is visible as soon as you enter my home. Thank god the wall is flat and not curved, as I'm not sure just how I would cope with that added delema lol

I've chosen black frames for my pictures, and there will be splashes of muted colour in a few art work pieces I'm including in the mix as well.

ive chosen different types of frames, some single, some multi picture frames, some with words and some without.

Susan...It is for each individual I believe. Consider the height and something so high you really can't see well enough to appreciate. That is too high for me. If the picture is large enough to see or low enough to see well it works for me. I suggest Googling and looking at some staircases and walls. Hope it will help you as it is something you need to consider and ponder on to make it presentable for yourself. Hope you get some better info than this from others here at Hometalk. Good luck

If you like Pinterest you can type in "gallery wall ideas staircases" in the Pinterest search and you will see numerous ideas and gallery picture plans for staircases! I think I would hang the pictures high enough so that people who were touching the wall as they go up and down the stairs couldn't disturb the arrangement.

The general "rule" about hanging artwork is that the piece should have it's top 1/3 at approximately eye level. That said, some items you might consider for your own stairs might include large items such as tapestry hangings etc that need not follow that "rule". Anything that has detail, photos of relatives, etc. should be at eye level to properly view it.

Ideally, slightly above head level of an average size person. So, maybe 6 feet.

  • If you're not into neat and perfect, you're golden, you can hang them any way you wish. If you can, get some kraft paper and cut out the shapes of the frames you have, tape them on the wall then play with the arrangement until you like what you see.
