How can I repair a dresser which was destroyed by spilled perfume?
I received a cherry dresser and someone spilled perfume on the top and ruined the finish, is there any way to repair it or do I just keep covering it with a doilie. Maybe someone has some advice on how to refinish a dresser? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Nancy

Nancy: it depends on how much work you want to do!!

You could just sand down the top of your dresser, find a stain that matches, and redo just the top. It can be done and it shouldn't be a really big project.

As a alternative, just lay photographs, post cards, pretty hankerchieves, a pretty piece of fabric and then get a piece of glass or plexiglass cut to fit and set on top. I did that as a holdover till I had time to devote to the refinishing process. And even after I refinished the top, I still used the glass to keep it protected from future mishaps.
If it didn't lighten the stain, just buff out with 0000 steel wool and then use a bit of the type of topcoat on a foam brush - this could be shellac in an old piece or poly in a new piece.
Hi Nancy, it will really depend on how much work you want to get into doing. You will probably have a hard time matching the stain exactly so if you want it to look seemless you would need to sand down the top of the dresser and restain it. You could also paint it but if it is nice wood and the rest in great condition you may not want to do that.
