How can I make over/restore an antique Singer cabinet?

I have an antique Singer treadle-foot sewing machine cabinet (no machine). I've had to remove the severly damaged veneer top, the underlaying wood has water stain and carpenter marks but is solid. Any suggestions on how to refinish or restore it? Photos of finished projects welcome!

Hi Mary, here is a Singer sewing machine cabinet they refinished here on Hometalk: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/refurbished-vintage-singer-sewing-machine-35390591 I think I would attempt to sand it out enough to get down to bare wood so it can be refinished/restained. Many of those marks won't come out completely but with a dark stain they would be far less noticeable.

It's not exactly what you asked, but most Singer sewing machines were of a relatively standard size, so the fact that the machine is missing is not a big deal. You should be able to substitute almost any other vintage/antique Singer sewing machine. I'd recommend a Singer 66 if you want to use the table as a sewing table. Most people don't realize how awesome old sewing machines are, so you can often find them pretty cheaply at thrift shops and antique shops.

Not sure if you have thought to make it into a cocktail cabinet?? Paint, Decoupage etc the top...................

If you wanted to replace the design in the centre, you could use either a transfer or copy the design and paint it in with inks etc. then finish.............
