Hi Maureen! Using chalk paint or gel stain are both great ways to update a china hutch to modern farmhouse style! Both methods require no sanding! :)

I have seen some grey colored stains that give a really nice farmhouse look if you don't want to paint and distress. Also, If you like brown furniture but want to give it the farmhouse look, you can easily sand it down, don't stain it, but then put a matte poly or finish on it. It will give the rustic feel. Good luck!

Paint and distress!
Here is how I redid one: https://thehoneycombhome.com/upcycled-hutch-makeover/
I would take off all doors and draws lightly sand down then pick your colors paint the whole hutch a color let dry then paint another color you want on the outside when dry sand off adages corners door ends to look worn so other color comes through .then varnish as usual.
You could try painting it with either chalk or milk paint. I used milk paint on my kitchen cabinets and they look great: https://momhomeguide.com/my-painted-kitchen-cabinets-a-year-later/
