Can oil based gel stain be used for outdoor projects?

I have some wood planks on my second story terrace that need to be refinished. I plan to sand off the old finish which looks to be some type of transparent colored varnish. It’s peeling off due to the direct sun exposure and salty ocean air.

Could I use some good quality oil based gel stain (I typically use this for furniture projects) for color if I use a marine grade top coat? I live within a mile of the ocean and our climate is subtropical. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

Hi Lynette, have you asked at the local paint store? They would know the best solution for your area. I know salt air and the wind too make a differene

Ask your paint expert! I know there is deck stain, not sure that is what you are looking for.

I wouldn't use anything but an exterior product like Olympia or Thompson deck stains on my oceanside deck. They aren't formulated for exterior use, don't have UV protection either.

Yes, you absolutely can do it. I have painted our main door with it and it looks neat. Although we are ready to paint again but it works.

Gel stain basically floats on top of the surface. Some may get absorbed into raw wood. Your best bet would be to use a good UV rated deck stain. Any topcoat will crack and peel from the weather. That is probably what is happening to yours. Wood expands and contracts needs to breathe.
