Does a 50/50 mixture of vinegar & water work as a deglosser?

I want to paint my bathroom cherry laminate cabinets but don't want to use a chemical deglosser. I can sand, if necessary, but read that you can degloss paint with vinegar. Has anybody tried the homemade paint deglosser with vinegar and water & how were the results?

I have used vinegar and water often to clean wood cabinets before painting! It works great! I think it would work well over your cherry laminate cabinets too. I'd try a small test spot first just to make sure. :)

Be sure to use a separate primer. As long as the surface is really clean, primer such as Kilz should adhere well and keep your paint from scratching off.

Vinegar and water works as a cleaner not a deglosser. You can use 220 grit sandpaper to remove the gloss or a green kitchen scubby which is what I use. Wipe off with a damp cloth. Prime with Kilz primer then paint.

  • no, just use cabinet enamel paint. here are some instructions for painting cabinets https://www.craftylittlegnome.com/how-to-paint-kitchen-cabinets/

  • No, it's a cleaner, not a deglosser. You can sand lightly then use a primer or adhesive primer.

VINEGAR IS ALSO USED AS A DEGLOSSER---clean surface with TSP, then wipe same surface with a different, clean, lint-free cloth (microfiber works wonderfully) or a white cloth damp with just water, and if you don't want to purchase LIquid Sandpaper (amazon), you can use distilled vinegar as a deglosser. Then, you want to use Kilz to be sure whatever you are painting definitely has something to adhere to and this also ensures the longevity of your refurbished wood piece.

the chemical compound/natural acidic nature of vinegar cuts through the varnish...the "glossiness" if you will.....

Vinegar can be used as a deglosser as well as a cleaner. If you use it as a deglosser, be sure it is completely dry before painting.
