Painting IKEA Furniture | The Do's & Don't's

We all have those favorite pieces from IKEA that you just don't want to part with. Learn from someone else's experience on what to do... and not do to spruce up your old, forgotten piece of furniture and turn it into a hidden gem!
As you can see by the messed up piece above the drawer, I put it together myself. I knew this was still a very functional piece of furniture I could use in my guest room, but the color was all wrong. Time to upgrade!
1.Don't Skimp on the Primer

As I did some research online, many people used Kilz or Rust-O-leum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. So, I went to the hardware store and convinced myself I didn't need to spend that much on primer, so I went with a cheaper version... bad idea. It took me seven coats to do what one or two coats should have been able to do. Don't skimp on the primer.
2.Do Clean your Furniture Piece Before Priming

After a spilled candle incident and a lot of dirt and grime accumulating over many moves, this bad boy was in need of a deep clean. Use the Krud Kutter cleaner/degreaser to make this as simple as possible.
3.Don't Use a Paint Brush

Paint brushes will leave streaks as you can see above. If you start with a foam brush or even a finish sprayer, you won't have to worry about these streaks and your project will go much more smooth.
4.Don't Forget the Top Coat

Spraying a clear coat over the top of your painted surface will make sure you have a glossy, smooth finish to restore its natural furniture feel.

Again, if you don't skimp on the primer, use the write sprayer/brushes, you could do this without half the strife it caused me. Regardless of my mistakes, I am happy with the result and it now matches the other pieces in the room, but save yourself some time and effort and follow these do's and don't's!
